Nadia Wilson
On 15th September 2007, the East London Clarinet Choir gave a performance of Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles arranged by Shea Lolin. Oor soloist for the evening was Nadia Wilson:
Nadia Wilson started learning the clarinet at the age of eight. Since then, she has had wide and varied musical career both in the UK and abroad and is an experienced soloist, orchestral musician and chamber musician. Nadia completed her performance studies with Michael Whight and Fiona Cross on the Postgraduate Diploma in Performance course at Trinity College of Music in Summer 2005, where she was a finalist in the Wilfred Hambleton clarinet competition. In the same year, Nadia performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and soloist Nigel Kennedy. In 2006, performing highlights included I've Got Rhythm and A Christmas Carol with the Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra and co-principal clarinet on tour with the Joint Seychelles-Kenya International Festival Orchestra.
During her time at college, Nadia performed as a principal clarinetist in the college orchestras and took part in masterclasses with renowned clarinetists such as David Heaton, Joan Eric-Lluna, Larry Combs, and bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. Nadia often plays with the Greenwich-based orchestra, the New Orpheus Ensemble including a performance as soloist for Finzi's Five Bagatelles for clarinet and strings in 2005. Nadia has performed with many other orchestras around the country, including St. Paul's Sinfonia, Dartington Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of the City and Oxford Chamber Orchestra in venues such as St. John Smith Square and Glastonbury Festival.
Since moving to London in 2003, Nadia has come to recognise her passion for chamber music and now plays regularly as a duo with pianist, Tau Wey, with whom she has performed successful recitals in and around London and particularly enjoys English duo repertoire. Nadia and Tau often incorporate arrangements of both pop and Chinese music into their recitals. Nadia is the founder member of the London Myriad Ensemble – a flexible ensemble consisting of a core wind quintet (www.londonmyriad.com.) The group are currently the resident ensemble for the renowned Concordia Foundation their Young Audiences project. They perform regularly in recitals and educational workshops in and around London. Their reputation through recitals at venues such as St. Martin in the Fields and St. James's, Piccadilly gained them a scholarship to Dartington Summer School in 2005, and this year they have received funding from both the Musicians Benevolent Fund and the Tillett Trust towards coaching on the Cubertou chamber music course in France.
Before studying at Trinity College of Music, Nadia read music at the University of Birmingham, specialising in performance. She played 1st clarinet in the Midland Youth Orchestra, with whom she also performed as a soloist. She formed and led the University clarinet ensemble, as well as directing the University Chamber Orchestra in December 2001. After graduating from Birmingham, she spent a year devoting herself to performance, whilst teaching with Lancashire Music Service. During this time, she performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto on a tour of Belgium.
